Our
Past...
Established in 1968,
the Northshire Day School is the region’s largest
and longest running childcare and early education
center.
For 34 years, the NDS
operated in a two-story, ranch-style building donated
by Sarah Larson, a local philanthropist who understood
the growing demand for quality childcare.
In the year 2000, the
NDS Board of Directors initiated its first ever Capital
Campaign to address a pressing childcare capacity
need in this region. The $4 million Capital Campaign
goal had three components:
- The New Building
– a new 10,800 square foot facility to double
NDS capacity and expand programs
- The NDS Endowment
– to provide income to keep the building fiscally
sound for years to come and maintain a low parent
fee schedule
- Northshire
ChildCare Fund – a separate endowment to provide
grants for other area childcare centers, to assist
with their needs
The “Building Our Future” Capital Campaign
was successfully completed in 2006. Among the scores
of donations from individuals, parents and staff,
NDS was fortunate to gain the support from the Kresge
Foundation as well as the Vermont Country Store, The
Orvis Company, community banks and many other businesses
in the region.
From the beginning, we have realized that our fundraising
success was dependant upon our ability to educate
the regional community on the benefits of quality
childcare and early education within the fabric of
our society. We believe we have achieved success in
this endeavor.
