Day School Parents Newsletter
April is the Month of the Young Child. April 14th – 18th is the week of the Young Child. We have many activities planned for your children. We will be displaying their artwork throughout our building and at the town hall. Each day we will have something special to do like having a pizza party, creating ice cream sundaes, taking trips to the park, (weather permitting), and trips to the library. The Manchester Music Festival will visit us during the month and we have rented a bounce house for Wednesday the 16th for the children to enjoy.
The Early Literacy Fair will be held here on April 29th and 30th from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. We will post more information about this event soon.
At our last staff meeting the subject of parents on cell phones was brought up. We feel that when dropping off or picking up your child, the staff and your child need your undivided attention. At the beginning of the day it is important to have the time to give your child a proper “goodbye” and not rush in, hand him or her to their teacher and continue with your phone call. Your child’s teacher also needs information about the child’s night. At the end of the day your child/children are happy to see you and need that one on one attention. The teacher may also have some information that you might need for the coming night ahead. So please turn off you cell phones while in the building.
Another concern from the staff is the speed at which cars are entering the parking lot. Many of you are driving too fast. The parking lot can be a very busy place: people and children coming and going, cars coming and going, etc. We all need to be careful and slow down!
I would like to remind you to make sure that your child/children have boots to wear outdoors. It is getting warmer and mud season is here. Also, please pack a lighter jacket for warmer days.
If your child would like to bring in a toy from home on their share day, that would be fine but please no toys on the other days. We have a lot of educational materials for the children to explore and we would prefer to have your children leave their toys at home. Please remember that the item brought in needs to fit in your child’s cubby.
The Bennington- Rutland Supervisory Union Early Education Team has announced their Child Development days, April 21st and 22nd at the Manchester Elementary – Middle School for Dorset and Manchester three and four year olds. Please call the BRSU Early Education Office at 362-4104 to schedule an appointment for your child. We at Northshire Day School cannot stress the importance of this screening. Please, if you live in Dorset or Manchester, make an appointment.

April 28th and 29th is the screening at Mt. Tabor Town Hall Early Education Center for Danby and Mt. Tabor residents. Please call the BRSU at 362- 4104 for registration.

During the week of April 14th we will sponsor another Scholastic Book Fair. Books will be on display in the front hall. We have been very successful with this event thanks to all of you. If you pay by check, please make it out to NDS for the amount listed on the book. There is no sales tax.
We will be celebrating Earth Day, April 22nd. We will be collecting returnable bottles and cans. A container will be placed outside both the front and side doors. Our pre-k class will clean up our yard and return the bottles to Discount Beverage. Please get involved and bring in a bag of returnable bottles after April 1st.
April 23rd & 24th professional photographers Kathleen Hall and Steven Smith from Hallsmith Photography will be set up to take photos of your children.
Thank you all who shared your Shaw’s turkey/ham points with us. We were able to purchase $100.00 worth of chicken breast for the school, WOW- a great team effort!
You are all invited to our 3rd annual spaghetti supper on May 15, 2008 starting at 5:30.
For the second year in a row on May 21st, rain date May 22nd the Dormy Grill Golf Tournament at the Golf Club at Equinox will benefit NDS. If you are interested in playing, registrations forms are being printed next week and will be available soon. We are in need of prizes. If you own a business and would like to make a donation, please let me know.
Sign Up Now For NDS Summer Camp 08
The Northshire Day School has big plans for the summer season. With the end of the school year rapidly approaching, the time to think about enjoying NDS Summer Camp 08 is now.
Starting June 23rd and running through August 22nd, NDS will be holding one-week summer camp sessions for area children from five to twelve years of age. The sessions will run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily. Space is limited in each session and registration is on a first-come first- serve basis.
The popular camp is once again under the guidance of NDS After- School teacher Cherie Thompson and will feature ``Nature’’ as the theme. In addition to plenty of day trips other camp activities will include: swimming, hiking, arts and crafts, music, science and math projects, organic gardening, and much more.
``Last year’s camp was a huge success. The kids loved it.’’ NDS Director Carol Kern noted ``the adult to student ratio is great and the sessions fill up fast.’’
